Romans 7:7
What shall we say then? Is the law sin? Certainly not! On the contrary, I would not have known sin except through the law. For I would not have known covetousness unless the law had said, “You shall not covet.”
The law is not sin, and it is not bad. When we think that obedience to the law will make us righteous before God, that is when we misinterpret the bible. The law was placed in the bible to show us what sin is. The law reveals to us just how spiritually bankrupt we are. We cannot work, or buy ourselves into heaven. Salvation only comes through the son of God. The law is not righteous, it is not holy. However Jesus is righteous, and is holy, and he can relate to us. Jesus understands our temptation, understands our trials, and understands our battles with the flesh. For He walked on this earth just like we do.
It was a big shocker to Paul when he realized he was not keeping the law. As we know Paul prided himself as a Pharisee among all Pharisees. He followed the law in actions. However, he was blown away to learn that even hating your neighbor was like murder. Even desiring your neighbors wife was like adultery. For God judges the heart. And not one thought can be hidden from Him.
Although our sins may not be exposed, we are still guilty. For none of us are righteous no not one. However, through Jesus Christ we are saved from our damnation due to our sinful nature. He bore all of our sins! Through him we are saved, we are justified, and we are currently undergoing sanctification. We should look at the Commandments as a guideline. And when we fall short, when we miss the mark, we should praise God that we are not condemned, because we are in Christ Jesus.
