John 14:26
But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you.
In this chapter of John we see the panic within the disciples. Jesus has began to talk to the disciples about his departure. The disciples are not yet confident in their relationship with God The Father. They are not comfortable with being alone while Jesus goes to The Father. They don't trust their flesh. They are in grief over the idea of separation from The Master. While on the cross didn't Jesus grieve when he experienced separation of The Father? Jesus being The Great Teacher took this opportunity to teach of man's relationship with God through obedience to the word. Then Jesus shared with them that a gift from The Father in the name of Jesus will come, a helper; in the Greek language helper is Paraclete (par'-a-klet) in general this word signifies: a legal advocate or counsel of defense, an intercessor. This is the Holy Spirit who will teach, and remind the disciples of Jesus's teaching.
Like the disciples I had to be taught about the Holy Spirit. God first came to me as the father, because I needed parental love and protection. Then again God showed Himself as The Savior when he brought salvation to Wally and my children. Currently God is taking me on the journey of knowing the Holy Spirit. And what a wonderful journey this is. See for many years I struggled with the trinity. I believed with all my heart in the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, I just had trouble understanding that the three persons of the trinity are united into one Godhead. See, my parents, aunts, and uncles are from a religion that denies the trinity. Denies that Father, Son and Spirit share the same attributes, co-operate in the same work, and that the Son is one in the Father and that the Spirit is one with God. Jesus through His word taught me that the three persons are one in character, all three are eternal, all three are all knowing, all three are called Lord and God, all three are glorious. They share the same work, in creation, In Jesus Christ's ministry, in salvation, in indwelling the church, and in directing the churches mission.
We were left with such a great gift! The Holy Spirit is a gift that keeps on giving! He gives us love, joy, peace, long suffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self control, comfort, life, sanctification, freedom, fellowship, blessings, the power of witnessing, righteousness, and truth. The more We give ourselves to God's Spirit the more we will grow in our gifts from the spirit. I encourage you to give yourself to the Holy Spirit on a daily bases, and journal on how He has grown you in one of His gifts. You will be blessed by the journey.
