John 10:28
And I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; neither shall anyone snatch them out of My hand.
We find that today's devotional is in the mist of a division. Among the people were heated discussion of Jesus. Whether they were for or against Jesus's teachings. Some were against Jesus and even went so far to say that Jesus had a devil and is a mad man. This party of people would question why anyone would even listen to His teaching. Others would stand up in His defense. Maintaining that Jesus did not have a devil, that He was a man of His wits and was neither senseless or graceless.
In this verse Jesus addresses those that were in the temple celebrating the day of dedication. They asked Jesus how long would He make them wait before He tells them if He is the Messiah. Jesus used the customs of that country to explain the divine truth to these pharisees. His sheep know Him as their Shepard. He explains the benefits of being His sheep. However these men were not His sheep and did not...could not...would not understand.
Jesus gives His sheep eternal life. As His sheep, that statement "I give them eternal life" should make us extremely happy. Our soul is eternal, it will continue once this body stops. As the sheep of our good Shepard our souls will be saved from everlasting perdition. That is the best news ever for us who believe! We will not come into condemnation! What ever cross we may have to carry here should be done in joy. Matthew Henry says that a man is never undone until he is in hell. This everlasting life is reserved for us and preserved by the one who gave us this gift. There is no power that can take away what God has given us. Jesus is our salvation, and our salvation is in His keeping!
These last two weeks God has taught me so much more of His everlasting promise, than I thought I knew. Now I will not just walk in the knowledge of His salvation. I will also walk in the joy of His promise of eternity.
