Matthew 6:25
"Therefore I say to you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink; nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing?
I have to give you some personal history about the verse we will be in today. My first bible study that I attended was in Matthew chapter six. Boy did The Spirit of The Lord begin a work in me through that chapter! I found so much counsel and guidance of how to live as a Christ follower, how to be a Christian wife and mother, and how to live my life in a way that's honorable and acceptable on to The Lord. Yes, all that in one chapter.
As a tax collector I'm going to say that Matthew saw his share of worry. To me it makes perfect sense that Matthew made sure to document this part of Jesus's teaching, which we know as Sermon on the Mount.
Have we ever really gained anything by worrying or obsessing? Other than an ulcer, gray hair, or in my case an overactive adrenal gland. According to WebMD. excessive worrying can make you ill! Here's what WebMD had to say about this; Chronic worrying affects your daily life so much that it interferes with your appetite, lifestyle habits, relationships, sleep, and job performance. Many people who worry excessively are so anxiety-ridden that they seek relief in harmful lifestyle habits such as overeating, cigarette smoking, or using alcohol and drugs.
God's Word tells us, that out of all His creations we are the most valuable and treasured. Our cares are His cares. So why do we worry? God asks us to put Him first. He says don't dwell or occupy your time with worries. Occupy your time with me! Dwell on me! Let Me consume your thoughts. God doesn't want, and should not have to compete with the things we worry about.
I pray that we can take this teaching in Matthew 6:25 and apply it to our lives. That when we begin to worry, may we turn away from it, and turn to dwelling upon God and how good he is, was, and will be to us. When we find that our time has been occupied by worry, I pray that we stop, and turn to his word and occupy our time with him.
