Matthew 6:30
"Now if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is, and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will He not much more clothe you, O you of little faith?
This week's devotional will be in the book of Matthew. Matthew was a tax collector in Capernaum before Jesus called him to be a disciple. Did you know Matthew was also called Levi??? I didn't know this and thought I would share this new found knowledge. Matthew opens up his book by giving the genealogy of Jesus Christ. We will be in the part of this book that is known as Sermon on the Mount. Which starts in chapter five. This sermon was delivered to the disciples on a mountainside above the sea of Galilee. Jesus looked on to the multitude and began to teach his disciples knowing that this teaching was not for the general world. It was not a teaching of laws. It was a teaching for those of a certain attitude. Better put, it was a teaching for those who were filled with the Holy Spirit.
Our Lord Jesus Christ is warning His disciples against distrust. Did you know that distracting, distrustful cares about the things of this life is the one sin Jesus warns about the most? I commit this sin over and over again on a daily basis. He knows us and how very week we are. How many times has the cares of this life robbed your peace? This sin enslaves the poor, just as the love of wealth does for the rich.
Do you see how Jesus is bringing in the contrast of worrying to faith? Ouch!! This is to enlighten us not to condemn us. He's asking us not to limit him. He's begging to be set free from the box of worry that we place him in. Jesus is saying to His children, "let me take care of you." God wants us to spend more time on our relationship with him then on the distracting life issues that come our way. We can gain strength to bear our everyday troubles through prayer. May God help us to bring our daily troubles to his feet.
